This is our first visit to the Big Island (although 4th visit to Hawaii). First a confession, I usually plan very detailed trip of all our travels but have COMPLETELY failed to do so for this one. Saddle Road is a mostly four lane highway. The Hamakua Route is nothing like the road to Hana either. There are some tight turns through the gulches, but it’s not a one lane road anywhere. The Big Island is very diverse from rain forest to snow covered peaks to live lava flows to up country mourain towns.
